A professional technician – often called an energy auditor – can give your home a checkup. You can also do some of the steps yourself. Professional energy assessments generally go into great detail to assess your home’s energy use. The energy auditor will do a room-by-room examination of the residence, as well as a thorough examination of past utility bills. Many professional energy assessments will include a blower door test. Most will also include a thermographic scan. There’s also another type of test — the PFT air infiltration measurement technique — but it is rarely offered. PREPARING FOR AN ENERGY ASSESSMENT
Before the energy auditor visits your house, make a list of any existing problems such as condensation and uncomfortable or drafty rooms. Have copies or a summary of the home’s yearly energy bills. (Your utility can get these for you.) Auditors use this information to establish what to look for during the audit. The auditor first examines the outside of the home to determine the size of the house and its features (i.e., wall area, number and size of windows). The auditor then will analyze the residents’ behavior:- Is anyone home during working hours?
- What is the average thermostat setting for summer and winter?
- How many people live here?
- Is every room in use?

Which is a top to bottom analysis of your home’s energy use including; a visual inspection, health & safety tests, energy efficiency tests, software analysis & proposing solutions in a report you receive a copy of. The site visit takes about 3 hours to complete and you are under no obligation to continue any further. Although Grants, Incentives & Financing may allow you to move forward on the project and help you invest in the home saving money for the long term. Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®
Free home energy assessments and grants of up to $4,000 to pay up to 50 percent of the cost of energy upgrades
This program works just like the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program. Homeowners begin with a comprehensive home energy assessment, then make energy efficiency upgrades with the help of a participating Home Performance contractor. The major difference is that with Assisted Home Performance with ENERGY STAR, income-eligible households can qualify for a grant up to $4,000 to pay up to 50 percent of your energy efficiency project. Two-to-four unit residential buildings with additional income-eligible households can qualify for a grant up to $8,000.
